On the 15th October, the University launched its Sustainability Strategy and we attended the launch event for it.
You can read the strategy here: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/polopoly_fs/1.810029!/file/TUoSSustStrategyFINALOct2018.pdf
The strategy says the following on the topic of food waste: "We will explore opportunities to collect waste food from other locations such as cafes, however, the logistical arrangements needed to do this at all in all University buildings may not be worth the relatively small amount of food likely to be collected."
We were quite disheartened by this statement. We collect hundreds of items every week from the University campus and believe that this is not at all "a relatively small amount of food". We are the only initiative in place to rescue food waste from the main University campus - it shouldn't be down to students to do this.
We are considering using this topic as our main campaign/awareness focus for next term, to incorporate more focus on the topic of food waste in the University's sustainability strategy and policies.
